In each session we will discuss one or more passages from one or more of Plato’s dialogues (and in sessions 1 and 6 I will provide some introduction to the texts that are at issue). The passages will be provided on handouts. Yet, those who wish to do their own reading might consider obtaining some of Plato’s dialogues. Book recommendations to follow.
Philosophical topics at issue include: the nature of knowledge, and whether we have any; beauty; reasons to be moral; morality’s relation to religion; democracy; the body as ‘the tomb of the soul’.
The fee for this 5 week course is £70 which includes a continental breakfast of croissants, conserves and fresh coffee.
