Join a local event to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1984 Miners’ Strike and its impact on the town organised by Colchester Trades Council & Wivenhoe Bookshop.
Wivenhoe became a focal during the strike. Miners, supported by locals and Essex University students, staged mass pickets at the gates of Wivenhoe Port to strikebreaking imported coal coming in through the port.

Planned itinerary
3.00pm – Guided walk from St Mary’s Annexe through the site of the former Wivenhoe Port to the
Port Entrance, speakers with memories from the time.
3.45pm – 5.00pm Gathering at St Mary’s Church Annexe for screening of
photo images from the time & a short film/readings.
