Much philosophy is about puzzles and even paradoxes. How can we discover something entirely new, given that, without prior knowledge of that thing, we would not recognise it when we found it?

How are we to understand judgements of beauty, given that they seem to claim a problematic objectivity? Where does political legitimacy come from? What is it to interpret a text or to be the same person from one moment to the next? By considering those and other puzzles, the course will serve as introduction to various philosophers – including Greeks, moderns and recent thinkers – and to the nature and practice of philosophy. Still, the puzzles are knotty enough to keep even old hands occupied.

No reading will be required beyond that of the handouts that will be distributed within the sessions.

The fee for this 5 week course is £70 which includes a continental breakfast of croissants, conserves and fresh coffee.
