Metaphilosophy investigates the nature, method and point of philosophy. Thus, some define metaphilosophy as the philosophy of . . philosophy. Is philosophy like science? Should it be? Can it secure eternal truths? Ought it to use thought experiments and appeal to intuitions? What is rigour and how much of it does philosophy need? What is philosophy good for, anyway?
The course will suit those new or at least fairly new to philosophy. The two parts of the course are bookable separately though having done part one will help with part two. There is no assigned reading but if one wants an accompanying book there is Overgaard, Gilbert and Burwood, An Introduction to Metaphilosophy (Cambridge, 2013).
The fee for this 5 week course is £70 which includes a continental breakfast of croissants, conserves and fresh coffee.
